Your social media feed tells a story—your individual feed, your church feed, every social that you are on probably tells (at least) a slightly different story.
What would you want that story to be? Take a couple of minutes and think about it before you read further. What story would you like your social media to tell?
How about your church’s social media? What story would you want that feed to tell?
Now, go to your social media feed and scroll a bit. What story does it actually tell?
Now, do it for your church social media—especially if you are an officer or connected to the social media work of your church.
Don’t blow past this and keep scrolling and say you read this post. A lot of improving our social media is evaluating and intentionality—you’ve got to take a few minutes to do these kinds of things.
It would be good if you could summarize in a sentence or so what story you want to convey and what story your social media is actually conveying.
Here’s a checklist, maybe rate each 1-10 for how prevalent they are:
* Kind, uplifting, encouraging
* Sharp, critical, sarcastic
* Others centered
* Me-centered
* Intellectual
* Down to earth
* ‘Normal’
* Quirky
* Heavily pointing out the faults of things mentioned
* Heavily positive about things mentioned
This applies to a personal account and can be done for a church account. For a church account, you may want to get even more specific about what story it tells about your church, God, and the gospel.
So, now let’s return to the question at hand: What story does your social media tell?
And how does that compare to the story you want it to tell?
What are three things you want to focus on going forward to improve this?
Again, don’t just move on. Finish off this look at your social media with this exercise by writing three things down.
